PROFILE

STATEMENT

PROFILE

Hiroe Matsushita: Harikiri-e and Painting

Hiroe Matsushita graduated from the Department of Japanese Painting at Kyoto City University of Arts.

She primarily works with tengujo-shi, a type of colored Japanese washi so thin and delicate that it is often compared to the wings of a mayfly. By repeatedly cutting, layering, and tearing the paper, she creates subtle mixtures of color and explores the expression of form. More recently, she has also been creating works that take advantage of the exceptional translucency of washi, exploring the interplay of light and color as they pass through the delicate layers of paper.

What My Work Means to Me
About Harikiri-e

I developed my own technique of cutting and layering Japanese washi paper, which I call Harikiri-e.

I use a cutter to cut out shapes in the paper, then layer different types of paper above and below them. I work with papers of various thicknesses, colors, and textures, cutting some pieces with a knife and tearing others by hand.

The process is not simply about layering paper. I may also scrape away or cut into paper that has already been attached, or tear away tiny pieces with tweezers. Each work has its own slightly different process, and I continually experiment with the materials—dyeing, crumpling, and manipulating the washi in different ways as I work.

I mainly use commercially dyed washi, but when I cannot find the color I want, I dye the paper myself.

By layering thin sheets of paper, unexpected depth, richness, and subtle variations of color emerge. These discoveries are an important part of the creative process for me.
